In this context, grownup refers to Parents, Teachers, Guardians (adult stakeholders in education).
I was a speaker at the 2022 Edify Technology conference which targeted Basic schools and basically both the other speaker and myself touched on the importance of using Technology in our educational space.
A teacher raised concerns about how incorporating technology gives kids access to the internet and then exposes them to uncontrollable things and how extended screen time is not beneficial to the kids.
First and foremost, incorporating technology into education does not only mean the use of computers and electronic devices but for the purpose of this write up, let’s assume it is.
There are parental control settings on most of the devices that we give to our kids and this can be used to control the access that they have and also the screen time.
Supervision is key! I love to see parents and guardians engage their kids when it comes to their education, with our busy schedules, it is not uncommon to find that most guardians know nothing about their children’s education.
Now this brings me to STEAM Education. What is STEAM?
STEAM in this context is not the vapor into which water is converted when heated. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics and it’s a way of teaching and learning to create an interactive, critical thinking, problem solving, creative space for our little ones to develop a wholesome mindset.
Parents/guardian involvement in their kids education is not stressed in enough! STEAM education encourages this and that is another reason why I love it so much.
As adults in a child’s life, we need to be intentional about being in their lives in all aspects, the school will not do all the teaching for you…being intentional means supervising as well.
You are the adult, you are the control button, we have no excuse!
